i tried restoring my network settings but dint work. The cellular data requires the mobile carrier. My guess is that 3G always works but when I'm out of range it tries to switch to 2G but since 2G never works it displays "No service". 0 5 years This is really annoying, but I've never had to go past a Soft Reset (hold down Power Button and Slide to Power Off).

Problems went away. Apple does this so people with older phones get frustrated (and thus will ideally upgrade to the latest phone).
